Dillinger Courtroom in the historic Pima County Courthouse

Composers, performers, and poets alike have all had their day in court. Johannes Brahms was a witness against his good friend in a divorce hearing. Clara Wieck and Robert Schumann sued her father for the chance to be married against his wishes. Franz Schubert and Ethel Smyth were arrested for revolutionary opinions and political activism. The centerpiece of the program is Brahms’s Op. 91: two songs written before and after an acrimonious court battle in which Brahms was a witness. Hear these stories and more—and the music they inspired—in this program for voice, viola and piano.

The centerpiece of the program is Brahms’s Op. 91: two songs written before and after the acrimonious court battle in which Brahms was a witness. The African American composer Jonathan Woody’s responses to Brahms bookend the set with text by two poet laureates: Nahum Tate (England 1692) and Roque Salas Rivera (Philadelphia 2018).

Hear these stories—and the music they inspired—in this program for voice, viola, and piano. Tucson favorites Emily Marvosh and Michael Dauphinais will be joined by award-winning violist/ composer Jessica Meyer for an evening of song and anecdotes, showing the close connection between music and justice.

The historic Pima County Courthouse venue will add to the immersive nature of this intimate program.
