are united through their American experience. And the American experience is created by our many voices.
Our nation is built from a stunning diversity of cultures and voices, each contributing music that impacts—and helps to shape—our country. From the most humble of places to the most prominent concert halls in our nation, folk music is for and from the people. This program celebrates these rich, unique and powerful voices with the songs of German, Italian, Baltic, Asian and Central American immigrants, now Americans.
Over 40 million Americans were born in another country—more than any other nation—a source of great pride and strength. The great Pete Seeger said, “The main thing that folk music does is to bring people together, to make them feel like they’re part of something larger than themselves, and to help them remember that they’re all part of the same community.”
With songs, each person weaves their dreams into the intricate tapestry of American life.
“Folk songs express the dreams and prayers and hopes of the working people.”
– Woody Guthrie
“Folk music has pretty powerful medicine for changing your heart.”
– Paul Stookey (of Peter Paul and Mary)
“Folk music is the original melody of man; it is the musical mirror of the world.”
– Friedrich Nietzsche
